APAG 45: The Three High School Students Who Founded Skunk Aid Explain How They Solved the Problem of Your Pet Getting Skunked!

On this edition of the podcast are the three founders of Skunk Aid. Jackie Molloy, Shayna Reznikov and Nicole Relias. These three amazing young women are students at Buffalo Grove High School. They are apart of the Incubator Edu Program, which is an entrepreneurial class that is conducted nationwide in our high Schools.

About a year ago these three high school students set out to solve a problem. As most aspiring entrepreneurs do, they create products or services to solve every day problems. This one is something that effects all of us pet owners out there. Skunk Aid, came about because one of the girls dogs “Bella” got skunked. We all know how awful that smell is, imagine how bad it is for our fury little friends. The girls set out to create an all natural solution that was safe for their pets and effective in eliminating the odor. Through trial and error the girls have done just that.

The girls of Skunk Aid also made it their mission to take the panic out of the situation. Having your pet skunked is a very stressful event, for you and your pet. By packaging the solution with instructions and all the necessary items, Skunk Aid eliminates the worry of what to do next to rid your pet of the smell. The slogan: Easy, Safe, and Hassle Free couldn’t be more true.

The Incubator EDU Program is preparing our future entrepreneurs and business owners to thrive. These kids are what will continue to make our communities great and our economies grow. This story of three high school girls should inspire all of you out there with an idea to go for it. These three made their idea come true. Now they have a successful business that has been featured on the Lou Manfredini show and has their product on the shelves at Ace Hardware stores in the area.

On this show is Mike Schiestel of Detail Kitchens located in Arlington Heights. He explains why ideas mean nothing unless you implement them. He is a big believer in the concept of “Ideation.” Mike is also a mentor for the Incubator EDU entrepreneurial program that is run through district 214 at Buffalo Grove High School. His role in shaping our next generation of entrepreneurs is a story you cannot miss on this show. Mike is one of our most fascinating guests in our great community. With his hard work and guidance he is making our community better everyday. Make sure to let your kids know about this program. I have a feeling they are going to want to participate.

Mike Schiestel’s story of began as a pilot. In his young adult life, aviation taught him many valuable lessons. Piloting airplanes taught Mike how to embrace failure. One of the most important lessons any entrepreneur needs to learn. He explains flying takes a lot of critical thinking to get yourself out of scary situations. This is something all business owners need to learn to be successful.  Avation shaped Mike into be the amazing guy he is today. The lessons learned from his days as a pilot in this highly informative interview, our ones you should not pass up.

Mike Schiestel is also the owner of Detail Kitchens in Arlington Heights. Opened in 1984,  Mike’s parents started the business by jumping in head first and they haven’t looked back.  Detail Kitchens offers a unique experience to all their clients. Mike explains in the interview that their clients are very involved with the design of their projects. To many contractors don’t involve the homeowners in the build out of their home remodeling project. Mike feels it is essential to have the client involved every step of the way. This has been the recipe for success. Mike’s creation of a family environment with all of his clients is crucial to their success.

Mike Schiestel’s involvement with the Incubator EDU program at Buffalo Grove High School is just off the charts awesome!! The program was designed to give high school kids a chance to enhance their teen age years by having them participate in an entrepreneurial program. The program assists teen agers in starting real companies with real products.  I will be fortunate enough to be interviewing two of the businesses that have been cultivated out of the Incubator EDU program in the coming weeks. Mike Schiestel also gives us five things, he thinks, that make a great entrepreneur. The one thing he emphasizes in the interview is the need to embrace failure. Failure in entrepreneurs builds the fire to keep forging ahead. Determination breads success. All you young, old or middle aged entrepreneurs out there,  will have to tune in to hear the other keys to being a successful entrepreneur.

We also get into the concept of Ideation. The idea of Product Market Fit. These young entrepreneurs are learning lessons that have value beyond words. These young trailblazers are the future of this great country. Mike Schiestel emphasizes to the kids the importance of ideas, but more importantly he emphasizes the implementation of these ideas.
