On this 67th edition of the podcast, Linda Zachman of Linda Z’s Sewing Center is my guest. Linda has been providing therapy to her customers for 50 years. The benefits of sewing are plentiful according to this trailblazer of an entrepreneur. This year Linda Z’s Sewing Center celebrated its 50th anniversary of being in business. What an amazing accomplishment from an even more amazing woman entrepreneur. As Linda says, “find your passion.”
Fifty years ago Linda Zachman started teaching lingerie sewing classes. With her education background, being one of the first 17 women to graduate from The Kellogg School of Business, Linda set out to educate people on the benefits of sewing. It was three months into her new venture when the Chicago Tribune came to do a story about Linda’s new business. Within days she had 75 people lined up out the door. This is when she knew this business was going to be her life’s passion.
Being a woman entrepreneur in the late 1960’s was rare. Linda Zachman didn’t let this roadblock deter her from building a successful venture. Not afraid of failure, Linda trail-blazed her own path as so many great entrepreneurs do. Providing employment to many of our great community members has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her endeavor.
Linda’s inspiration after 50 years of business is the ever changing business environment. Being an entrepreneur has taught her not to be afraid of change. The biggest lesson we can learn from Linda Z’s Sewing Center , is that we always need to be evolving . That is what Linda has been doing since the day the doors opened in 1967. Now with her two daughters, grandson, and brother involved with the business there is no telling what the future holds for Linda Z’s.
Sewing is a therapeutic outlet for so many of Linda’s customers. She gives us the five benefits sewing has on us and why it’s important to learn this skill. Being one of the last Sewing Center’s in the area, Linda Z’s provides services many home sewers need and require. From their maintenance, fabrics, and classes they have a little something for everyone.
This coming weekend, July 22nd, Linda Z’s Sewing Center will be holding Christmas in July. The small stuffed animals that are made at the event will go to charity for children who are in need. Linda is involved with many great philanthropic causes. She shares with us f ew of them and a story of a Vietnam nurse who received a quilt from the ‘Quilts of Valor’ program helping ex military veterans.
These are the reasons I continue to stress the importance of shopping with our local small businesses. Having Linda Zachman in our community for the past 50 years has made us a better place. As Linda says, “Find what makes you better. What’s important to you. This will lead you to your passion.”
